4. Training Scope and Curriculum The training programme must cover, at a minimum, the following topics: 4.1 Refrigeration Fundamentals Principles of refrigeration and heat transfer Refrigeration cycle (compression, condensation, expansion, evaporation) Basic thermodynamics concepts Pressure, temperature, and enthalpy relationships 4.2 Refrigeration System Components Compressors (types, operation, lubrication) Condensers and evaporators Expansion devices (TXV, capillary tubes) Refrigerants (common types, properties, environmental impact) Oils and lubrication systems 4.3 Electrical and Control Fundamentals Basic electrical circuits in refrigeration systems Motors, contactors, overloads, and starters Thermostats, pressure switches, and sensors Basic control logic and safety interlocks 4.4 Tools, Equipment, and Instrumentation Manifold gauge sets Temperature and pressure measuring instruments Leak detection methods Safe handling and storage of refrigerants 4.5 Installation and Basic Maintenance System start-up and shutdown procedures Preventive maintenance practices Cleaning and inspection of components Basic fault identification 4.6 Fault Finding and Troubleshooting Common refrigeration faults and symptoms Systematic troubleshooting techniques Interpretation of pressure-temperature readings Basic repair and replacement procedures 4.7 Safety, Health, and Environmental Considerations Refrigerant safety and handling regulations PPE requirements Environmental legislation (Ozone Depleting Substances, GWP awareness) Safe work procedures and emergency response 5. Training Methodology The service provider must propose a blended approach including: Classroom-based theory Practical hands-on training using refrigeration training rigs or live equipment Demonstrations and guided fault-finding exercises Assessments (theoretical and practical) 6. Training Duration Recommended duration: (service provider to propose optimal duration) Daily training hours to be specified Provider to indicate minimum and maximum class sizes 7. Accreditation and Compliance Training provider must be accredited by a recognised body (e.g. QCTO, SETA, or equivalent) Training to align with South African occupational health and safety regulations Facilitators must be qualified, experienced refrigeration practitioners 8. Training Materials and Certification Provider to supply learner manuals and training materials Practical equipment and tools to be provided by the service provider Learners to receive a certificate of attendance or competence upon successful completion 9. Venue and Logistics Indicate whether training is on-site or off-site Provider to specify venue requirements (power, space, ventilation) Provider to state responsibilities regarding PPE, and equipment 10. Pricing Schedule The quotation must clearly indicate: Cost per learner Total programme cost Breakdown of costs (training, materials, assessments, certification) VAT inclusive/exclusive Any additional or optional costs
